Baseball Holds On For 12-9 Win Over Visiting UC Davis

UCR has been playing from behind quite a bit recently, but on Thursday it was the Highlanders turn to jump on top early as they put three on the board in the bottom of the first. Joe Chavez singled up the middle, and a stolen base and a Devyn Bolasky bunt single put runners on the corners. Francisco Tellez followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate UC Riverside's first run of the night.
Bolasky made his way to third thanks to a pair of stolen bases, the second of which came on a failed pick of attempt. Nick Vilter drew a walk, and both runners moved up 90 feet after Aggies starter Harry Stanwyck (2-5) was called for a balk. David Andriese's single to center allowed Vilter to come around and score, and the Highlanders led, 3-0.
UC Davis got a run back in the top of the second as Nick Lynch laced a one-out single through the right side and came around to score on Spencer Brann's double off the wall in center field.
UC Riverside appeared to have the game in hand after the bottom of the second, loading the bases against Stanwyck with two outs. He issued a five-pitch walk to David Andriese, which made it 4-1 Highlanders and ended Stanwyck's night. Raul Jacobson came out of the pen to try and get out of the jam, but his second offering to Thomas Walker was ripped over the left field fence for a grand slam.
Tellez drove in two more runs in the bottom of the third with single to right, and UCR led 10-1.
Although Highlanders' starter Jake Smigelski (5-4) allowed just one run through five innings, he labored, throwing 100 pitches during his time on the mound. He was lifted in favor of Angelo Lingos to start the sixth, and that's when the Aggies began to mount their comeback. Lingos faced five batters and was unable to record an out before being replaced by Joie Dunyon. Dunyon didn't fair much better, as all three of the batters he faced reached base as well.
By then, the UCR lead was down to three, and Dylan Stuart was called upon to try quell the insurgence. He retired the next three batters, but one of those at bats was an RBI ground out which brought UC Davis to within two, 10-8.
Stuart put a goose egg on the board in the top of the seventh, and in the bottom of the inning, the Highlanders picked up some insurance on a Drake Zarate RBI single. The Aggies scored an unearned run in the top of the eighth, and an Andriese RBI single in the bottom of the eighth ended the scoring. Stuart threw another scoreless inning in the top of the ninth to secure his second save of the year along with the win.
UC Riverside and UC Davis play game two of their three-game series on Friday evening beginning at 6 pm PT.
