UC Riverside Baseball Wins Second Straight Over UC Davis, 7-6
4/18/2014 9:51:00 PM | Baseball
Riverside—UC Riverside and UC Davis followed a familiar script Friday evening as for the second game in a row, the Highlanders jumped out early to a large lead, only to watch the Aggies come storming back. Thankfully, the ending to the script remained the same as well as UCR held on to make it two in a row of UC Davis by a score of 7-6 (Box Score).
UC Riverside starter Zach Varela (5-2)was battling the flu, and it showed, as he needed 28 pitches to get through the top of the first. UC Davis loaded the bases with nobody out before Varela got Nick Lynch to ground into a run-scoring double play. He then induced a fly ball off the bat off Tino LIpson to escape with just a one-run deficit. Varela settled down after that keeping the Aggies off the board over the next four innings.
The Highlanders (16-18, 5-3), meanwhile, put runners on in each of the first three innings, but were unable to scored. All of that changed in the bottom of the fourth. Francisco Tellez led off the frame with a single to right center, and moved to third on a Nick Vilter double to left. David Andriese then hit a ball back up the box that scored Tellez and advanced Vilter 90 feet to third. The very next batter, Thomas Walker, made it 2-1 Highlanders lifting a sacrifice fly to center plating Vilter.
Cody Hough led off the next inning, and sent Spencer Koopmans' (3-1) offering over the left field fence for his first home run of the season to put the Highlanders up two. Koopmans retired the next two batters, but walked Tellez, and plunked VIlter to put two runners on. The Aggies (16-19, 3-8) made the call to the bullpen, bringing in Justin Mullins. He hit Andriese to load the bases, and then allowed a bases-clearing double to Walker to give UC Riverside a five-run lead. Matt Ellis' single up the middle scored Walker stretching the Highlanders' lead to six.
Varela ran out of gas in the top of the sixth, as TIno Lipson reached on an error by Tellez, and the next two batters walked to load the bases. That ended Varela's night, and Jordan Kron came on in relief. Tellez fielded Brian Ruhm's grounder and gunned down Lipson at home,, but Even Heptig drove in a run on a fielder's choice grounder. A walk to Seth Batty loaded the bases, and Kevin Barker's single to center plated two to slice the lead to three, 7-4.
It remained a three-run game until the top of the eighth as Tanner Bily opened the inning with a single, and advanced to second on a throwing error by Chavez. A triple off the bat of pinch-hitter Austin March plated Bily, and Heptig's ground out to short cut the Highlanders advantage to one.
UC Riverside Head Coach Doug Smith brought Kevin Sprague in to pitch the top of the ninth, and he retired the side in order for his fourth save of the season.
The Highlanders and Aggies finish their three-game Big West Conference series on Saturday beginning at 1 pm PT.
