Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team returns to Big West Conference play this week with a three-game home series against UC Davis. The games are slated for Thursday (6 pm), Friday (6 pm) and Saturday (1 pm), and the final two games will be broadcast on ESPN3.
The Highlanders (14-18, 3-3) will also be trying to snap a six-game losing streak dating back to the final game of a three-game series vs. Cal State Northridge on April 6.
Each of UC Riverside's most recent losses have been by a single run—6-5 at #12 Oregon on April 13 (box score/recap) and 6-5 at San Diego State on April 15 (box score/recap).
Nick Vilter broke out of his home run slump crushing his ninth dinger of the season against the Aztecs. That snapped a string of 15 straight games for the junior infielder without a long ball. He continues to pace the Highlanders with a .468 on base percentage and a .651 slugging percentage. Francisco Tellez leads the team with a .354 batting average.
UC Riverside is expected to keep its typical weekend rotation this week with Jake Smigelski (4-4, 3.07) throwing Thursday, Zach Varela (4-2, 2.92) pitching Friday and Ben Doucette (2-3, 4.42) getting the nod on Saturday.
UC Davis heads to the Inland Empire with a 16-17 record including 3-6 in conference play. The Aggies have dropped four of their last six games, but took two of three from Long Beach State over the weekend.
UCD has an offensive slash line of .269/.345/.350, but they have three regulars hitting .320 or better led by Adam Youngs' .354 average. Young's .451 on base percentage also leads the squad.
The Aggies pitching staff brings a 4.70 ERA into the weekend, which is by far the highest in the conference. They also have issued 155 walks in 285.1 innings of work this year. UC Davis will throw a trio of right handers at the Highlanders this week—Harry Stanwyck (2-5, 5.04) on Thursday, Spencer Koopmans (3-0, 3.00) on Friday and Evan Wolf (3-5, 5.05) on Saturday.
UC Riverside is 35-26 all-time aginst the Aggies, but UC Davis swept the series a year ago by a combined score of 30-15 (view all-time results).
