Fullerton, CA—The UC Riverside Baseball Team's offense stalled Saturday evening as Cal State Fullerton held the Highlanders to just six hits in a 6-0 victory.
UC Riverside (21-24, 9-8) threatened early as Joe Chavez and Devyn Bolasky led off the top of the first with back-to-back singles, but Francisco Tellez popped up to second, Nick Vilter struck out and David Andriese flied out to left.
The Highlanders put runners on first and second in the top of the third as well, as Cody Hough doubled to open the frame, and Tellez drew a two-out walk, but failed to score.
Meanwhile, Zach Varela (5-4) retired the Titans in order in the first two innings, but in the third, Austin Deimer doubled down the right field line, Timmy Richards drew a walk, and Clay Williamson singled up the middle to score Diemer. Keegan Dale then laid down a sacrifice bunt scoring Richards and putting Cal State Fullerton up, 2-0.
The Highlanders managed just three hits over the next five innings, as Justin Garza kept UC Riverside in check. He would go eight innings, scattering six hits, walking three and striking out six.
Varela kept Fullerton off the board over the next three innings, and was lifted in favor of Angel Landazuri to start the seventh. Landazuri retired the Titans in order in his first inning of work, but it was a different story in the eighth. Jared Deacon doubled to left to start the inning, and Taylor Bryant laid down a sac bunt to move him to third. UC Riverside catcher Matt Ellis fielded the bunt and tried to get the lead runner, but his throw was wide of the mark, and Deacon scored the Titans third run of the night.
After Dale drew a walk, J.D. Davis singled to left to load the bases. Matt Chapman lifted a sac fly to right, and the Highlanders brought Kevin Sprague in from the pen. David Olmedo-Barre greeted him with a single through the right side for the final 6-0 margin of victory.
UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton play the final game of their three-game Big West Conference series on Sunday beginning at 1 pm PT.
