Fullerton, CA—With two victories over ranked opponents last week, the UC Riverside Baseball Team lowered its RPI to 77 in the latest NCAA rankings. If the Highlanders are going to continue to make an end-of-season push for a postseason tournament berth, they will need to pick up some road wins this weekend in a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton.
UC Riverside began last week with an 8-2 win over 27th-ranked UNLV on Tuesday (box score/recap), and then upended No. 3 Cal Poly on Friday, 7-3 (box score/recap). They took a 3-0 lead against the Mustangs into the fifth on Saturday, but couldn't hold on as Cal Poly battled back for a 7-5 win (box score/recap). The Mustangs then took the rubber match on Sunday by a score of 7-2 (box score/recap).
Cal State Fullerton was ranked number one in the nation in a handful of preseason polls, but after starting the season with an 8-3 record that included three wins at Oregon and two over Washington State, the Titans have gone 16-17 including a 7-8 mark in Big West play. Fullerton won its last two ball games though, 6-0 at Long Beach State and 1-0 at UCLA.
The Titans are hitting .251/.321/.347 as a team with just one player batting better than .300—first baseman/designated hitter Tanner Pinkerton at .311.
Cal State Fullerton boasts one of the best weekend rotations in the conference with RHP Thomas Eshelman (6-2, 1.82) on Friday, RHP Justin Garza (3-3, 3.68) on Saturday and RHP Grahamm Wiest (3-4, 1.49) on Sunday.
The Highlanders are 21-47 all-time against the Titans, but UC Riverside has won three of the last five meetings between the clubs (view all-time results). This marks the first time since the 2008 season that Cal State Fullerton hasn't been ranked when facing the Highlanders.
