Riverside—The UC Riverside Baseball Team is still making a last-minute push for the postseason over the final eight games of the year, as the Highlanders host Loyola Marymount on Tuesday evening at The Plex in the first of five straight home games.
UCR (22-24, 10-8) took two of three from Cal State Fullerton over the weekend to solidify its hold on fourth place in the Big West, two games back of Long Beach State (26-23, 12-6) in the race for third. Drake Zarate earned conference field player of the week honors driving in the game-winning run in both of UC Riverside's victories over the Titans (read the release).
Nick Vilter clubbed his 10th home run of the season on Friday, while Thomas Walker raised his average on the year to a team-high .338 thanks to a seven-for-13 performance against Fullerton.
Angel Landazuri (3-2, 4.36) is expected to get the start Tuesday for the Highlanders.
The Lions are 28-20 on the year, including a 15-9 mark in the West Coast Conference. Six of their regulars are hitting better than .300, as the team boasts an offensive slash line of .292/.357/.374. Austin Miller leads the way hitting .372/.464/.467, but as a team, LMU has just nine home runs on the season.
Carlos Fuentes (4-1, 4.19) gets the start for the Lions. The right-hander has logged 29.2 innings with 22 strikeouts and 19 walks in 19 appearances for Loyola Marymount this season. This is his first start of the year.
The Highlanders are 18-16 all-time against LMU (view all-time results), and the teams have split their last four meetings.
