Each member of the Dirtbags starting lineup had at least one hit on the day, and starter Nick Sabo (4-5) allowed just two hits in his eight innings of work
The Dirtbags (29-24, 14-7) scored first for the second straight day putting runners on first and third with nobody out to begin the top of the first. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners up 90 feet, and UCR starter Ben Doucette (3-5) walked Michael Hill to load the bases. A sac fly to left center off the bat of Michael Hill made it 1-0 Long Beach State.
The Dirtbags scored three more runs in the top of the second to give themselves a four-run advantage. Daniel Jackson led off the frame with a single to center, and a sacrifice bunt advanced him to second. A walk to the number nine hitter, Colton Vaughn, put runners at first and second, and a Colby Brenner fly out to right center gave the Dirtbags runners on the corners.
A wild pitch allowed Vaughn to move to second, and Garrett Hampson beat out an infield single to drive in the second run of the game for Long Beach State. Hough's throw from short was wide of the mark, though, allowing another run to score. Ino Patron followed with a single to right scoring Hampton with the Dirtbags fourth run of the day. A Richard Prigatano single to center ended Doucette's day as Dylan Stuart came out of the bullpen, striking out Hill to end the inning.
The Highlanders (24-26, 11-10) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second as Francisco Tellez laced a one-out triple to right center, and came home when Sabo uncorked a wild pitch.
Two innings later, the Dirtbags put the game out of reach plating three unearned runs. Hampson singled with one out, but Dylan Stuart got Patron to hit a tailor-made double play grounder to second. Unfortunately for the Highlanders Joe Chavez's throw to second sailed past Hough to put runners on the corners. Prigatano singled to make it 5-1 LBSU, and one batter later, Johnny Bekakis' double down the left field line put the Dirtbags up by six, 7-1.
Long Beach State put another three spot on the board in the top of the sixth and two more in the seventh to take a 12-1 lead.
Pinch hitter Vince Fernandez gave UC Riverside its second run of the day with a solo home run in the top of the ninth.
The Highlanders host Grand Canyon on Tuesday at 3 pm PT at The Plex for their final home game of the season. They then travel to Hawai'i for three games over the weekend to conclude the 2014 regular season.
