Women's Soccer Plays A Woman Down For 35-Plus Minutes But Ties Utah Valley 1-1
9/19/2014 6:31:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Orem, UT—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team found itself trailing 1-0 and playing a woman down in the second half at Utah Valley Friday evening, but Tatum Lockett scored the equalizer in the 79th minute and the Highlanders were able to hold down the fort in overtime to emerge with a 1-1 tie.
UC Riverside (4-1-2) outplayed the Wolverines in the first half, outshooting them by a 9-3 count, including 3-1 in shots on goal. Despite that edge, the Highlanders came away empty handed and headed into the locker room tied at zero.
The match evened out in the second, and in the 74th minute, Kali Stubbs picked up a deflected ball in the Highlanders end, and scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Wolverines up, 1-0.
Moments later, Tayler Dragoo was whistled for making contact with the Utah Valley goalkeeper, earning her a red card and an automatic ejection from the match.
Coupled with the Utah Valley (5-2-2) score, Dragoo's ejection appeared to light a fire under the Highlanders, as less than four minutes later, Lockett intercepted the ball in the Wolverines' end, and dropped it over the head of goalkeeper Jessica Duffin for her second goal of the season.
Neither team was able to score in the two overtime periods, and the teams walked off the pitch with a draw.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend traveling to Logan, Utah for a Sunday meeting with Utah State. Kick off is slated for 11 am PT.
