Men's Soccer Plays A Man Down For Final 43 Minutes, Falls At Irvine, 1-0

Box Score Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team began divisional play Wednesday evening with a road trip to UC Irvine, but the Highlanders were forced to play a man down for the final 43 minutes, and gave up a late goal to drop a 1-0 decision to the Anteaters.

The play was even in the first half with Irvine outshooting UC Riverside (5-8-1, 1-4-0) nine to seven overall, but the Highlanders owned a four-to-three advantage in shots on goal. Neither team dented the back of the net, though, and they went into halftime tied, nil-nil.

All that changed with 1:36 gone in the second, however, when UC Riverside goalkeeper Ashkan Khosravi was issued a red card. That forced the Highlanders to play a 11 on 10 the rest of the way, and the tied quickly turned in favor of the Anteaters (3-8-3, 1-3-1).

UC Irvine outshot UCR 11-3 in the second half including four to two in shots on goal. One of those strikes came in the 84th minute from Jaime Phillips, who beat Vincent Morales and the Highlanders defense for the lone goal of the match.

UC Riverside returns home to the Inland Empire on Saturday, October 17 as they host CSUN beginning at 7 pm PT.
