Men's Soccer Drops A 3-0 Decision At San Diego
8/31/2015 8:25:00 PM | Men's Soccer
San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team was looking to improve to 2-0 on the young season, but host San Diego scored three times, and took advantage of a controversial call at the end of the first half to win, 3-0.
The Toreros connected on the lone score of the first period in the 29th minute of play. Following a UCR foul just outside their defensive 18, Darragh Vieyra bent his subsequent free kick into the upper left hand corner of the goal to put USD up 1-0.
UC Riverside thought it had the equalizer in hand as the clock ticked towards zero to close out the first, but the officials ruled that Dylan Smith's goal came just after time had expired. Head Coach Tim Cupello pleaded the Highlanders case, but all he received for his trouble was a yellow card, followed by a red card.
With 12:06 gone in the second, San Diego struck again as Djordje Babic's corner kick found Merlin Hoeckendorff for a header in the box and his first score of the year.
Just over five minutes later, Keegan Smith dented the back of the net as he went streaking down the right sideline and was able to slip the ball into the lower left corner.
That score held up the rest of the way as the Toreros kept their record perfect at 2-0.
The Highlanders remain on the road this weekend as they travel to the north west for matches against Syracuse on Friday, September 4 and Colgate on Sunday, September 6.
