Fresno, CA—Just one week removed from its first regular season title in two years, the UC Riverside Men's Golf Team returns to the Nick Watney Invitational hosted by Fresno State at the San Joaquin Country Club.
The Highlanders hoisted the team trophy last week at the Roadrunner Invitational in Bakersfield, where Sam Gillis earned his first career victory by a single stroke ahead of teammate Matt Lutz, and Andrew Spilman recorded his first career top-5 finish with a fourth place showing (story).
In the team's last appearance in the inaugural Nick Watney event in 2014, UCR made a final round push to finish ninth out of ten teams in the field (story).
The tournament begins with a shotgun Monday at 8:30 am with 36 holes, followed by Tuesday's final 18, with tee times between 8 and 10 am.
The 15-team field is comprised of BYU, Columbia, CSU Bakersfield, Fresno State, LMU, Nevada, Pacific*, Sacramento State, and Saint Mary's as well as five Big West schools—Cal Poly*, CSUN, Long Beach State, UC Irvine*, and UC Santa Barbara.
*Paired with UCR in rounds 1 & 2.
San Joaquin Country Club will play at par 71, 6,975 yards for the Nick Watney Invitational.
From the course's website: "The golf course at SJCC is both visually spectacular and highly competitive. In fact, San Joaquin's USGA Championship (Par 71) course includes natural elevation changes of up to 60 feet. The SJCC course is known for being challenging yet impeccably groomed, renowned yet accessible. And it's home to golfers of all ages and skill levels."
