Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten In Big West Play With 2-1 Road Win Over UC Davis

Box Score Davis, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Soccer Team (7-4-1, 2-0-1) remains unbeaten In Big West play this year following a 2-1 road win over UC Davis Thursday afternoon.

The win moves the Highlanders into first place in the Big West South Division with a conference-leading seven points. CSUN (5-4-1, 2-0-0) is in second place in the division with six points, but the Matadors play at UC Santa Barbara this evening at 7 pm PT.

After battling to a scoreless tie through the first 51 minutes of action, Ricardo Ruiz (Lake Elsinore, CA) picked up his first assist of the day when he found Romario Lomeli (Panorama City, CA) open at the top of the box. Lomeli fired the ball just inside the right post for his fourth goal of the season, and a 1-0 Highlanders' lead.

Less than six minutes later, Ruiz was once again in the middle of the UC Riverside offensive attack, as his free kick found Eduardo Sanchez (Bloomington, CA) in the box. Sanchez settled the ball with his body, turned and fired for his second score of the year.

It was still a 2-0 match with just 42 seconds remaining when UC Davis (5-5-2, 1-2-0) put an end to the shutout bid. Kyle Higgins' header off of an Evan Barrett cross sliced the Highlanders' lead in half, and that was where the scoring would end.

This marks the first time in its 16-year history that UC Riverside is undefeated through its first three Big West matches. The team has already bettered its win total from each of the past two seasons, and surpassed its point total in conference from 2015.

UC Riverside remains on the road this weekend heading to Sacramento State Saturday for a 3 pm PT kick off against the Hornets.
