Riverside–Now in sole possession of third place in the Big West, the UC Riverside Women's Basketball Team looks to improve its positioning heading into the final stretch of conference play, and complete the season sweep of Cal State Fullerton this Saturday at 4 pm inside Titan Gym.
Michelle Curry scored a career-high 26 points, and Réjane Vérin added 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists to lead UC Riverside to a 73-69 victory over UC Santa Barbara in the Highlanders' last game on Thursday night.
Curry has scored in double-digits in five of her last six games. She has 81 points in her last 103 minutes of play over a four game period, in which she is averaging 20.3 points per game–she averages 11.5 in Big West games.
Vérin now has 973 total points at UCR, and is just 27 shy of becoming the 18th member of the 1,000 point club. She leads the conference in scoring at 17.2 a game, and is second in rebounding at 8.6 per contest.
Shooting guard Lauren Holt looks to get beck into the scoring flow after chipping in seven points against the Gauchos. She was averaging 19.0 points a game over the previous three outings.
Head Coach John Margaritis now sits two victories away from becoming just the fourth coach in Big West history to earn 200 wins in the league.
Cal State Fullerton hosts UC Riverside in their lone game of the week Saturday. The Titans are coming off a, 69-45, loss at home to Cal Poly last Saturday. They have lost seven straight, and scored over 50 points just two times in the midst of their current skid.
Iman Lathan paces Fullerton with 13 points a game, and Jade Vega also scores in double figures at 10.1 per contest. Vega also leads the squad on the boards, pulling down 7.9 per Big West game.
The Titans average 11.9 made free-throws a game, more than twice as many as their opponents (5.8) during conference play.
In the first meeting of the year between the clubs, Vérin scored 20 points, and Curry added 14 in the UCR's wire-to-wire, 68-45, victory over Cal State Fullerton in the SRC Arena (story).
UC Riverside leads the overall series 27-22, and has won the last three match-ups by average of 33.3 points.
