RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team has added a fourth member to its 2018 recruiting class, announcing on Friday that guard George Willborn III will be transferring from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).
Willborn III joins the Highlanders following a sophomore season in which he started in 18 of 35 games for the Roadrunners, averaging career-highs of 7.7 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest on 46.3 percent shooting.
"We are fortunate that George chose to make UCR his new academic and basketball home," Head Coach David Patrick said. "He has won and played at a high level, and will bring great athleticism and toughness to our program."
The 6-foot-3 guard ended his sophomore year at UTSA with 11 double-digit scoring efforts, including a career-high 22-point, 9-rebound performance against Ottawa on Nov. 30, 2017. He also had a pair of four-game double-digit scoring streaks and made an impact in the postseason with a 16-point outing in the Conference USA Tournament Quarterfinals against Marshall back on Mar. 8.
A Chicago, Ill. native, Willborn III graduated from De La Salle Institute in 2016. As a senior, he was an All-Catholic League North First Team selection, averaging 19.2 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.6 steals per game. He was also named an All-State Special Mention by the Chicago Tribune and was one of 12 players from Illinois to be nominated for the McDonald's All-American game.
The Highlanders' latest news comes in the closing weeks of a busy April which has already seen the program
introduce its new head coach, David Patrick, and announce the signings of Australian guard
Dragan Elkaz, New Zealand U19 National Teamer
Callum McRae and Texas forward
Zac Watson, as well as the hiring of new assistant coaches
Mike Magpayo and Liam Simmons.
Due to NCAA transfer rules, Willborn III will sit out the 2018-19 season and be eligible to play as a redshirt junior beginning with the 2019-20 season.
