MALIBU, Calif.—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team did not see the start it was hoping for Thursday night as the Highlanders fell 3-0 to host Pepperdine to open up the 2019 season.
The two teams remained scoreless through much of the first half as both defenses looked strong, but a Highlander miscue on a Wave set piece in the 39th minute would result in a 1-0 lead for Pepperdine as the home team capitalized on a UCR own goal. Up 1-0, the Waves were on the attack again late in the half and punched in their first goal of the season with just 14 seconds remaining to double their score as each team headed to the locker rooms.
The second half was a stronger showing for UCR as the Highlanders again played solid defense to start, but the Waves would find their third and final goal in the 68th minute. Pepperdine continued to push all match long and it showed in the corner kick battle which they won 12-1.
The Highlander attack was spread out with four different players representing the four shots on the afternoon, but unfortunately none of them found the frame. Opportunities did arise in UCR's offensive third leaving hope for the young team to continue building together and figure out how to get on the board in the its next match.
Senior Annie Bailey earned the start in goal for UCR playing all 90 minutes and registering three saves.
UCR will now look to put this one behind them and bounce back for this Sunday's Crosstown Showdown with CBU.
