BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team fought till the very end in its Thursday night matchup with Cal State Bakersfield, as the Highlanders forced a late overtime, but the Roadrunners would emerge victorious 2-1.
The host Runners were quick to open up at their own field notching the first goal of the match in the 25th minute the feet of Chelsea Duran, but the UCR offense continued its pressure through the first 45 minutes. The Highlanders would tally six total shots, five of which were on frame, but the CSUB defense continued to bend and not break as the two teams headed to locker rooms.
Just over 43 minutes minutes later the Runners were just minutes away from capturing a win, until the Highlanders spoiled their chances with a huge goal from freshman Alex Hargrave, who punched her first career collegiate goal in the 89th minute. Sophomore Natza Marin and Junior Miah Conde assisted on the play.
The two teams would head to overtime, where the Highlander defense continued to hold CSUB from a second score for the last 80 minutes, but the Runners would find a way in the 105th minute on a game winning goal from Jaden Skinner.
The Highlanders ended the match with 9 nine total shots, but could not notch any in either overtime period. Senior keeper Annie Bailey tallied four saves on the evening.
UCR will look to bounce back on the road next Thursday at San Francisco.
