Presented by Altura Credit Union
Northridge, CA— The UC Riverside Women's Basketball team (7-15, 3-5) trailed CSUN (9-13, 4-4), 7-6, in the first quarter, but that was their final deficit of the night as they led for the final 32 minutes of play in a, 67-62, victory over the Matadors.Â
"It was nice to see us play a lead and maintain our composure when they cut into it. I love how we responded to their pressure with timely scores and stops." said Head Coach Seyram Bell.
Jannon Otto paced the Highlanders with 27 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists. She also became the 19th member of UCR Women's Basketball 1,000 point club in the first quarter with a mid-range jumper.Â
Keilanei Cooper finished with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Marina Ewodo had eight points, 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals in the victory.Â
After finishing the first period with a, 12-9, lead, UCR got threes from Otto the first two possessions of the second quarter to go ahead, 18-9, and force CSUN to call for time.Â
CSUN cut into the UCR lead midway through the second quarter, when Bryanna Brady scored off a feed from Jalyn Clay to make it 25-17. Brady's bucket started an 8-0 run that was capped off by Keilanei Cooper, who would also drain back-to-back triples for the blue and gold. The Highlanders took a 10-point advantage, 32-22, into the locker room at the half.Â
In the fourth, the Highlanders withstood several attempts by CSUN to get back in the game. The last of which brought the Matadors within four with 36 seconds remaining in the game and the Highlanders hanging on to a 63-59 lead. UCR locked in defensively to limit CSUN to one shot attempt, a miss, and a turnover on the next two home possessions, while UCR UCR converted 4-6 free throws to put the game away.Â
The 67-62 victory snapped a four-game skid in Big West play and was the first conference road win this season.Â
