Highlanders Split Doubleheader to Take Series Against UC Irvine

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of California, Riverside baseball team wrapped up a three-game set against the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Anteaters on Sunday, March 7 at the Riverside Sports Complex. The Highlanders took game one 10-8 and were bested in game two 12-14 in order to take the series from the 'Eaters, 2-1.

The Highlanders won the first game 10-8, having jumped out with a sizeable lead by the bottom of the third inning, coupled with effectively holding off UC Irvine offense from overcoming their advantage across nine innings.

It was the second straight game that Head Coach Justin Johnson's Highlanders proved their ability to come from behind and win. "Winning a series from a team like Irvine really feels great, they're a great team in our conference." He continued, "Super proud of our team and love the way they played today. We are really excited to win the first series out of the gates this year."

After UC Irvine snagged an initial lead, 2-0, the Highlanders came from behind and scored 4 runs to take a 4-2 lead.

Eight singles and a triple contributed to UC Riverside's five-run frame in the third inning, extending the Highlanders lead to 9-3. In the fourth, Dylan Orick doubled to send designated hitter Jacob Shanks home, putting the tenth run on the board for the Highlanders.

In the seventh inning, the 'Eaters poured on the offense adding four runs to their total, closing in on UCR's lead, 10-8. The would be it for UC Irvine however, as Andre Granillo took the mound and shut down any hopes of an Anteater comeback.

Orick was 3-for-4 in game one, with two runs and two RBIs. Throughout the slugfest, UCR had 13 hits including three from Orick. Ely Stuart also had a two-RBI day, and Ethan Payne drove home three.

Game Two again tested the fight in the Highlanders, but UC Irvine would outlive UCR to take the game 14-12.

"You know the best takeaway from the whole weekend is just how tough this team is and the grit they showed even in the game we lost. We gave up 8 runs in the second inning, collected ourselves and battled back immediately with four runs. We kept competing and playing hard. I loved the passion and focus and effort I saw. I could see on the field how excited this group of guys is to be back!"

The Highlanders hit the road next, traveling to University of San Diego for a three-game set March 12-13.
