First Day of Busy Weekend Proves Successful for UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside started off a busy weekend of competition on Friday, running and throwing at the Vince O'Boyle Classic, Mike Fanelli Track Classic and Stanford Invitational. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Ashraf Abdelmagid got things started for UCR at the Stanford Invitational, running a 14:08.38 in the 5k for the sixth fastest time in program history.  
  • Norma Alvarez and Carolinh secured Big West qualifiers in the steeplechase at Stanford. Noah Murasmith also locked down a conference qualifying mark in Palo Alto.  
  • Karyssa Owens (53.97m) and Melissa Toilolo (45.26m) finished first and sixth in the women's hammer throw at Vince O'Boyle in Irvine.  
  • Also hitting a new mark was Juliana Best, who set a new personal record with a 40.07m in the javelin to win the event by a sizeable 6.94 meters.  
  • UCR's 4x100 relay teams were on their game once more on Friday. The women dropped another sub-46 and finished third at 45.84 while the men's tandem of Jason Sherman, Isaac Ja, Andrew Garcia and Evann Adams posted a 42.18 just six days removed from clocking in at 42.41.  
  • Monea Jennings continued to crank out lifetime bests with a 14.13 in the 100mH at UCI. 
  • Jessica Boyd (11.86) and D'Lainey Nakamoto (11.95) both hit personal bests in the 100m at the Vince O'Boyle Classic while Sherman dropped his 100m down to 10.64m and cracked the top five in program history.  

HIGHLANDER HIGHLIGHTS 

  • UC Riverside won on both the men's and women's sides of the 4x400m relay in Irvine. The men's group of Joshua Ezieme, Reggie Day, Andrew Garcia and Liam Carr clocked the fifth fastest time in program history, putting up a 3:12.01.  
  • Owens' hammer throw at UCI was a new season best.  
  • Kyan Thomas hit what was close to an NCAA preliminary mark with a 15.23m in the triple jump in Irvine. 
  • The Highlanders grabbed five of the top seven spots in the women's triple jump at UCI.

  • UC Riverside concludes the weekend action on Saturday with the remainder of the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Classic.
