Sariah Johnson leads UCR in three-set defeat
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - UC Riverside (4-12, 0-5 Big West) continued Big West play on Friday evening at the SRC Arena with a 3-0 loss (15-25, 21-25, 14-25) to CSUN (7-8, 3-2 Big West).
Sariah Johnson led UCR in kills for the second time this season and first in Big West play.
The Highlanders trailed up to the first stoppage with Izzy Jeffery, Johnson, and Madison Pulsipher registering a kill apiece. UCR won four of six overall points in a brief hot streak and found additional points through Johnson and Pulsipher's seven combined kills, a pair of aces, and occasional Matador attack errors.
Pulsipher, who logged a career-high 13 kills last Saturday against UC San Diego, led the Highlanders through set one with four kills.
UCR came out more formidable after the intermission. Malia Tanksley stuffed a Matador at the antenna to cut the set two deficit to 6-4, and consecutive CSUN errors brought the hosts to within one at 7-6.
Johnson attacked off the block for her fifth kill and another Matador attack error returned the deficit to two. UC Riverside forged a comeback with its defense before the visitors took set two.
CSUN errors made up the Highlanders' first three points of set three.
Nicole Hughes, making her first appearance since September 26, got the latter end of back-to-back points with her first kill of the night. Hughes and Evelyn Hendrix rose up on UCR's next point for the Highlanders' sixth block of the match, and Hughes later went cross court to cut the margin to single digits.
UC Riverside finishes its second home weekend on Saturday, October 10, with a 4:00 pm first serve against Cal State Bakersfield at the SRC Arena. Tickets are on sale now at GoHighlanders.com/tickets.
