(Box Score)
Irvine, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team continued its late push for an upper division finish in the Big West Conference, Friday, with a 3-1 road win over UC Irvine. That's the third straight conference victory in a row for the Highlanders, who began Big West play with an 0-2-3 record.
The win improves UC Riverside to 13-2-3 overall and 3-2-3 in the Big West. With one match remaining at Long Beach State on Sunday, the Highlanders are looking for their second consecutive winning season in conference play. Last year UCR went 5-3-1 in the Big West securing its first conference tournament berth in the process.
The game began with an own goal as the Anteaters misplayed a ball in their defensive end that found its way past UC Irvine keeper Marissa Welliver with 6:32 gone in the first. Kacie McElrath gave the Highlanders a 2-0 lead just under 22 minutes later, grabbing the rebound of her own shot and knocking it between the pipes.
Kristi Tanaka's shot with just over 16 minutes gone in the second period was blocked, but Amber Plumlee was there to follow it up giving UC Riverside a 3-0 advantage.
Gina Scachetti finally got the Anteaters on the board with 9:49 remaining in the match, but it was too little too late as the Highlanders secured their 13th win of the season.
