A 35-yard strike from freshman forward Kacie McElrath (Palm Desert, CA/Horizon HS) gave UCR a 1-0 victory at the University of San Diego Tuesday. McElrath's fourth goal of the year helped the Highlanders win their school-record seventh consecutive game and maintain their perfect start to the season.
Riverside (7-0-0) endured a flurry of shots from the Toreros throughout the game. USD (4-5-0) held a 20-7 shot advantage but it was McElrath's shot that proved the difference. Just seven minutes into the contest, the freshman found Torero goalkeeper Karen Cook off her line and enleashed an attempt from 35 yards. The shot was perfect, looping over a jumping Cook and into the back of the net. The goal tied McElrath with classmate Jenna Leonti for the team lead with four goals and gave her 11 points on the season, breaking the school record for most points in a season by a freshman.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead, the UCR defense took over. Weathering a barrage of shots, the Highlanders were outshot 12-4 in the second half but never allowed their lead to slip. Sophomore goalie Tawny Poggio (Santa Ana, CA/Mater Dei HS) preserved her fifth shutout of the year with seven saves.
The win was UCR's first ever over the Toreros and broke the school record for consecutive victories set during the 2002 season. The Highlanders look to continue their unblemished start this weekend in Cedar City, UT. Riverside plays Centenary College on Saturday at 1 p.m. before taking on Southern Utah University Monday at 2 p.m.
