UC Riverside 2, Northern Arizona 1 - Box Score
Riverside—Senior midfielder Renee Scachetti scored twice as UC Riverside halted a two-game losing streak by defeating Northern Arizona University 2-1 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at the UCR Soccer Stadium. The Highlanders improve to 5-3-1 while the Lumberjacks fall to 3-7-0.
After a week off, the Lumberjacks threatened first against the Highlanders, who were working on just one day's rest. Nine minutes into the contest, NAU's CeeCee Odorfer found herself open in the penalty area but UCR junior goalie Tawny Poggio pawed away Odorfer's one-on-one attempt. The ball trickled toward the goalline, where freshman defender Kristen Williams cleared it away before Odorfer could follow. UCR had its first clear chance in the 25th minute, when a cleared UCR corner fell at the feet of junior forward Amber Plumlee. Plumlee's left-footed strike from 22 yards was tipped over by Lumberjack goalkeeper Andrea Berra.
Scachetti continued her scoring touch at 33:19, breaking the deadlock with her sixth goal of the season. UCR won a free kick on the right side and Plumlee floated a ball into the penalty area, where Scachetti rose above her defender to loop her header over Berra.
NAU threatened again at the end of the half when Kylie France hit the crossbar from six yards out. The Highlanders made it 2-0 at 58:46 when senior forward Vanessa Chanez was fouled in the box. Scachetti stepped up and slotted home for her second two-goal game of the season. It was her team-leading seventh goal of the year, leaving her one shy of her school record of eight goals, set in 2004.
NAU wasted no time in pulling a goal back, scoring just 66 seconds later. Tara Cozzetto found an unmarked Odorfer in the penalty area. Odorfer's left-footed shot beat Poggio to make it 2-1 UCR at 59:52. The scoreline remained that way for the rest of the game.
UCR outshot NAU 13-9. Poggio made five saves to get the win while Berra stopped seven shots for the Lumberjacks.
