Cal State Fullerton 1, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Fullerton, CA—Cal State Fullerton's Brianna Buffington scored with 2:08 remaining in the second overtime to defeat UC Riverside 1-0 in the teams' Big West Conference opener on Sunday night at Fullerton's Titan Stadium. The Highlanders drop their second straight game to fall to 7-4-0, 0-1-0 on the season while the Titans improve to 5-5-1, 1-0-0.
In a rematch of last season's Big West Tournament final, Buffington followed up a UCR clearance and found the upper right corner of the net. It was the junior's third goal of the season and the first goal scored by the Titans against the Highlanders in a regular season match dating back to the 2001 season.
Junior forward Jenna Leonti (Corona, CA) had the Highlanders' best chance in the first half as her open header in the 27th minute from inside five yards just missed the right post.
The Titans, who outshot the Highlanders 14-9 on the evening, had two chances to win the match in the waining seconds of both regulation and the first overtime period. The first came with 19 seconds remaining on the clock in the second half off a cross by Mandy Puffinberger that was headed toward the line by Candice Byler. UC Riverside sophomore defender Kristen Williams (Roseville, CA), however, was in the right place at the right time, preventing the goal by volleying the ball off the line and away from danger as time expired. The second chance came just a minute into the first overtime as Kristen Boujos' shot off another corner skirted past the defense, just missing the far right post, keeping the match scoreless.
UCR senior goalkeeper Tawny Poggio (Santa Ana, CA) passed another milestone, albeit in a losing cause. Poggio made four saves on the night, moving her past Mary Gleason (UCSB - 1998-2001) for second place on the Big West career saves list. Her 358 career stops are eight shy of Megan Pickering's conference record of 366.
Fullerton goalkeeper Karen Bardsley made five saves in notching her fourth shutout of the season.
The loss was the first for UCR in a regular season Big West game since October 15, 2004, snapping a 12-game unbeaten run. Even so, the Highlanders have not lost a Big West game in regulation since October 20, 2003. It was also the Highlanders' first loss in a conference opener since 2001.
