Del Rosario, Lennala's Late Heroics Lead UCR To 2-1 Win Over UC Davis
10/14/2007 4:47:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Riverside 2, UC Davis 1 (2OT) - Box Score
Riverside—Tessa Lennala’s second goal in as many games gave UC Riverside (8-5-1, 2-1-1) a 2-1 double overtime victory over the visiting UC Davis Aggies (5-8-0, 1-3-0) at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
For 84:59 this Big West Conference match was about tough defense. For every seemingly good scoring opportunity was an equally great defensive play. Both keepers, Deanna Borgelt of UCR and Sarah Peters of UCD made key saves in what looked like a match that would end in a 0-0 draw.
However, with five minutes to go the Aggies’ Samantha Faber came streaking through the Highlander defense and booted a shot from just inside the 18-yard box, beating Borgelt to her right.
When all of the fight could have been knocked out of the home team, it wasn’t. The UCR offense fought to pressure the UC Davis squad, drawing a foul in the opponents zone with just under two minutes to play. On the ensuing free kick, Letty Villalpando lofted a perfect ball that a charging Jill Del Rosario headed into the back of the net. The goal was the first of the season for the senior defender.
The first overtime had a few offensive pressures from both teams but ended with the same 1-1 result as regulation. At 7:33 left in the final period, Lennala blasted the game-winner just inside the left post, outside the reach of the diving keeper. Assists were credited to Natalie Ducatenzeiler and Jenna Leonti on the play, as Lennala moved in a second-place tie on UCR’s list of goals scored in a season.
UC Riverside next plays Cal State Northridge this Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
