UC Riverside 3, Toledo 2 - Box Score
San Diego, CA—The UC Riverside (2-0) women’s soccer team built a 3-0 lead over the first 65 minutes of it’s match againt Toledo (0-1-1) and then held on late, in winning 3-2.
The lone goal of the first half came from freshman Natalie Ducatenzeiler in the 25th minute. UCR was awarded a free kick after a Toledo foul and Ducatenzeiler nailed it from midfield, beating the goalie and giving UCR a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Ducatenzeiler’s second of the season as she scored against Florida Atlantic in the season opener.
Another freshman scored her second goal of the season. Pat Brady, on an assist from Ashley Parks, gave the Higlanders a two-goal lead, beating the keeper on a one-on-one. Just three minutes later, UCR made it 3-0 on Tessa Lennala’s first goal of the season, unassited in the 60th minute.
Toledo’s Molly Cornwell scored two unassisted goals in a ten-minute span late in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as UCR held the Rockets scoreless over the last 14 minutes of the match.
The UCR women’s 2-0 start has happened only twice before as a Division I team. More impressive is that both of the wins have come against teams that were participants in the 2006 NCAA Tournament.
The Highlanders travel north to Oregon next week, where they face off against Oregon, Friday in Eugene, then Oregon State on Suday. Friday’s match is set for 7:00 pm and then Sunday at 1:00 pm.
