Late UC Irvine Penalty Kick Gives Anteaters 1-0 Win Over Highlanders
10/19/2008 10:57:00 PM | Women's Soccer
UC Irvine 1, UC Riverside 0 - Box Score
Riverside—UC Riverside goalkeeper Brittany Goetz (Irvine, CA) etched her name in the Highlanders' record book Sunday evening as early in the second half, she picked up her third save of the game, and 120th of the season. That save moved her past Tawny Poggio into first place on the Highlanders' single-season saves list. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to prevent UCR from dropping its third straight conference match, 1-0, to visiting UC Irvine.
UCR Single Season Saves Leaders
1. 122 Brittany Goetz 2008
2. 119 Tawny Poggio 2003
3. 108 Tawny Poggio 2005
The teams played evenly throughout the entire game with only a handful of scoring threats on the night, and it looked liked the game would head into overtime. However, Highlanders defender Denise Thomas (San Bernardino, CA) was called for a foul in the box with 4:44 remaining setting up a UC Irvine (8-7-1, 2-2-1) penalty kick. Judy Christopher knocked home the goal for her first score of the year, and the lone goal of the game.
The Highlanders (5-10-2, 0-5-1) have three matches left in the season beginning with a pair of road games at Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 26, 6 pm) and at Cal State Northridge (Oct. 30, 2:30 pm). The team's final home match of the season in Nov. 2 vs. Seattle at 1 pm.
