Box Score - #19 Pepperdine 3, UC Riverside 0
Malibu - The UC Riverside volleyball team played their second ranked opponent of the 2009 season on Sunday afternoon in the third game of the Pepperdine Asics Classic, taking on the host Waves, ranked #19 in the country. The Highlanders played it tough in all three matches but could not get enough points for a win as they fell 25-22, 25-22, and 26-24. UCR drops to 1-8 on the year while Pepperdine improves to 7-2.
The first set was tightly contested as there were 10 tie scores and seven lead changes throughout. The Highlanders took a short-lived 21-20 lead late in the set off a Wave attack error before Pepperdine went on a five to one run to win 25-22.
In the second set, Pepperdine led from the get-go as they opened up a six-point advantage early on, 7-1. They would push the lead to 16-9 before UCR rallied back to within two points at three junctures down the stretch, the last being at 23-21 off block assists by Shannon Moyneur and Shelby LeDuff. The Highlanders rally was not enough, however, as the Waves scored two points to win set two 25-22.
After falling behind identical 25-22 sets, the UC Riverside volleyball team was looking to win set three and push the No. 19 Waves into extra frames. The Highlanders led 15-10 midway through the third set and were positioned at 24-21 to take the set point, but Pepperdine proved their national ranking by scoring five consecutive points to win the set 26-24 and the match.
Kelly Simpson posted a team-high 12 digs while Dominique Cowling recorded 10 digs and a game-high 10 kills. Bianca Endersby tallied nine kills and six blocks while Brittney Murrey had 31 assists for the Highlanders.
UC Riverside breaks for 12 days before opening Big West Conference play at UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 pm.
