
Highlanders Run Unbeaten Streak To Six With 2-0 Win Over Bowling Green

The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team's unbeaten streak now stands at six following a 2-0 win over Bowling Green in the first day of the UC Riverside Soccer Tournament Friday evening. Denise Thomas (pictured) put the Highlanders (4-2-2) on the board in the first half, and Jessica Cortez added her first career goal in the second period.
UC Riverside forced the pace early and often as they outshot the Falcons (3-4-1) 11-2 in the first period finally breaking through with 33:21 gone in the half. Kristina Kelly found Thomas streaking down the left side of the field, and Thomas beat the last defender to make it 1-0 Highlanders.
It was more of the same in the second half as UCR outshot Bowling Green 10-6 in the stanza. The Highlanders finally got the two-goal cushion they were searching for with 11:10 to go in the match as Cortez took an Ashley Parks pass eight yards from the goal and beat the Falcons keeper for the final 2-0 margin of victory.
UCR's six-match unbeaten streak (4-0-2) is the third longest such streak in the history of the program topped only by the 2004 team's 12-match and the 2005 squad's 11-match streaks,
Day two of the UC Riverside Soccer Tournament is slated for Sunday with Blwoing Green taking on UC Irvine at 10 am, and the Highlanders hosting Utah Valley at 1 pm.
