Highlanders Volleyball Loses Hard-Fought 3-0 Contest At Cal Poly

San Luis Obispo, CA - The UC Riverside volleyball team completed their Central Coast weekend on Saturday night with a 3-0 loss at Cal Poly at Mott Gymnasium. The Highlanders were close in each match but fell 25-20, 25-23, and 25-20. Senior Dominique Cowling (pictured) led all players with 14 kills as UCR dropped to 0-2 in Big West play and 1-10 on the season.
After falling behind after the first two sets, the Highlanders opened up the third set with a 9-5 advantage after a Mustang (5-10, 1-1) error. UCR then led 13-10 midway through the set off a Cowling kill before Cal Poly rallied and tied things up at 14 apiece. The Highlanders failed to put a rally of their own together, however, as the Mustangs outscored the blue and gold 11-6 down the stretch as they took home the set and match win.
Freshman Shelby LeDuff posted a game-high and career-high four block assists on the night, while Amanda Nilsson recorded a team-high nine digs and Brittney Murrey posted 25 assists.
UC Riverside continues Big West play with their first home match of the season on Friday, October 2 against UC Davis at 7:30 pm at the Student Recreation Center.
