Box Score - CSU Bakersfield 3, UC Riverside 1
Sacramento, CA - After earning their first win of the 2009 season against Sac State a mere two hours prior to their final match of the day, the UC Riverside volleyball team looked to make it two in a row on Saturday against Cal State Bakersfield, but came up on the short end of a 3-1 decision falling 25-17, 25-17, 22-25, and 25-19.
The Highlanders (1-5) dropped the first two sets but rallied in the third to keep themselves alive. UCR led for most of the set but saw a five point advantage at 21-16 quickly turn into a 23-22 contest. The Highlanders kept their composure though and used consecutive kills by Shelby LeDuff and Dominique Cowling (pictured) to close out the set and force a decisive fourth set.
In the next set, however, UCR never led and could only close the gap to four points down the stretch, eventually falling 25-19 to CSUB (3-3).
Cowling posted her second straight double-double with 21 kills and 10 digs while LeDuff and Tonbara Youpele each added 10 kills. Amanda Nilsson recorded a team-high 18 digs while Youpele had 17, and Brittney Murrey added 36 assists.
UC Riverside returns to the court next weekend in Malibu, CA for three games at the Pepperdine Asics Classic. The Highlanders face off against Army on Friday, Sept. 11 at 4:30 pm followed by matches against Seattle on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 4:30 pm and host Pepperdine on Sunday at 2:30 pm.
