Cal State Northridge 64, UC Riverside 50 Box Score
Northridge, CA—Two Bryson Hampton free throws gave the Highlanders their biggest lead of the night at 42-36 with 15:39 to go in the second half, but a pair of scoring droughts—one lasting nearly eight minutes, and one spanning the last 5:14 of the game sent UC Riverside to a 64-50 loss to Cal State Northridge Thursday evening. The loss drops UCR to 7-9 overall and 1-3 in conference. The Matadors improve to 6-10 on the season and 1-3 in the Big West.
The first half saw five ties and four lead changes, but the Highlanders used a 9-1 run capped off by a Sean Cunningham three pointer to take a 29-24 lead with just over four minutes to go before the break. They maintained most of that lead the rest of the half heading into the locker room up 35-32
The Highlanders extended their lead in the second scoring 7 of the first 11 points after the break to go up six, 42-36, for their largest lead of the game. Two free throws by Hampton gave UCR that lead with 15:39 to go. It was the last points the Highlanders would score until the 7:45 mark when Kyle Austin connected on a pair of free throws—a span of 7:51. Cal State Northridge went on a 9-0 run during that stretch to take a 45-42 lead prior to Austin's freebies.
The Highlanders took the lead back on two more occasions and the teams were still tied at 50 with 5:14 left on the clock, but the Matadors went on an 14-0 run to close the game.
Austin led all scorers with 18 points while Cunningham added 11 and Lateef McMullan chipped in with 10 for UC Riverside. Cunningham double-figure scoring effort was his second straight and marked the first time he had reached double digits in consecutive games since March 5 and 8, 2008.
Kenny Daniels led Cal State Northridge with 17 points on the evening including 10 after the break.
The Highlanders remain on the road playing at UC Santa Barbara Saturday, January 16 at 7 pm PT.
