Austin's 25 Not Enough For UCR In 63-56 Loss At UC Santa Barbara
1/16/2010 6:51:43 PM | Men's Basketball
UC Riverside 63, UC Santa Barbara 56 - Box Score
Santa Barbara—Kyle Austin (pictured) led all scorers with 25 points, but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders dropped a 63-56 decision at UC Santa Barbara Saturday evening. Austin got some offensive assistance from Lateef McMullan who scored 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting from the field, but the rest of the team made just 8 of 28 shots on the night. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Highlanders and dropped them to 7-10 overall and 1-4 in Big West play. The Gauchos improved to 9-7 including 4-2 in conference.
Things started out well for the Highlanders as Lateef McMullan and Kyle Austin connected on consecutive three-pointers to give UCR a 6-2 lead with 2:58 gone in the first. Unfortunately, their offensive struggles returned as they went scoreless for the next five minutes not breaking their scoreless streak until Austin nailed a mid-range jumper. Thankfully, the Highlanders defense was doing its part, and Austin's bucket reduced the Gauchos lead to 9-8.
UC Riverside led 16-15 with 6:11 remaining, but another UC Santa Barbara run made it 23-16 with 4:19 left. The Gauchos extended that lead as the period came to a close taking a 32-23 score into the locker room with them.
The Highlanders scored the first points of the second half and a 9-0 run shortly thereafter gave UCR a one-point advantage, 37-36. UC Riverside still led by one, 39-38 with 13:36 left on the clock, but the Gauchos strung together a 9-0 run of their own to lead 47-39. The Highlanders cut the lead to five on three occasions, but were never able to get closer despite Austin's 16 points after the break.
Give the opportunities UCR had to climb back in the game, their performance from the free throw line loomed large as they missed 10 of 20 from the charity stripe overall. Austin was 7 of 9 form the line while the rest of the squad was just 3 of 11.
The Highlanders are on the road again next weekend as they travel to Cal Poly on Thursday, January 21 at 7:05 pm PT and on Saturday, January 23 at UC Irvine for an 8 pm tip.
