Women's Soccer Looks For First 2010 Conference Win Sunday vs. Cal Poly

Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team opened Big West Conference play Friday evening by ending its seven-match scoring drought thanks to a first-half Candis Novis goal. But it wasn't enough to give the Highlanders the win as UC Santa Barbara exited the Inland Empire with a 2-1 victory. Next up for UCR is a Sunday, 1 pm PT home match against Cal Poly. Fans who are unable to attend the match in person may follow it on their computers and mobile devices via LiveStats.
Conference coaches picked the Mustangs to finish second in the Big West this season, and thus far they are 5-5-1, 0-0-1 in 2010. After starting the season at 3-1, however, they are just 2-4-1 over their last seven matches. Two of their losses are to ranked opponents—a 7-0 defeat at No. 3 UCLA to open the season on August 22 and a 1-0 loss vs. top-ranked North Carolina on September 10.
The Mustangs and Highlanders have two common opponents this season in Utah State and San Jose State. UC Riverside tied the Aggies, 0-0, on September 19 and fell to the Spartans, 3-0, on September 12, while Cal Poly lost to Utah State, 3-2, in overtime on September 12, and topped San Jose State, 2-0, on September 3.
The Highlanders and Mustangs have squared off against one another on nine occasions with the Cal Poly boasting a 5-1-3 record. The Mustangs have won two in a row over UC Riverside including last season's 2-0 victory at Cal Poly.

In 2009, White finished the year with a goals against average of 0.80 (49th lowest in the nation) and a save percentage of .875 (10th best in the country). From August 28 through September 13, she ran off a 454 minute and 55 second scoreless streak spanning six matches.
Her 7 shutouts on the season were tied for the second most in Highlanders history.
AND A FRESHMAN SHALL LEAD THEM
It's still early yet, but freshman Melisa Escamilla is tied with Senior Candis Novis atop the Highlanders goal-scoring list at the moment. Only twice in the nine-year history of the program has a freshman finished the year as the team's leading scorer—Jessica Armel (4 goals, 1 assist) in 2002 and Renee Scachetti (7 goals, 4 assists) in 2003.
BONUS SOCCER
The Highlanders set a program record in 2009 with seven overtime matches on the year going 1-2-4 in those contests. This season, they are 0-0-3 in their three matches that have gone past the 90-minute mark. The team's last overtime win came in a 1-0 decision over Texas State on August 30, 2009.
SEPTEMBER SWOON
The Highlanders were shutout in each of their seven September matches which is the longest such streak in the history of the program. The finally broke out of their slump with a Candis Novis goal in a 2-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara on October 1.
