Men's Basketball Takes Home Opener With 81-48 Win Over Pomona-Pitzer

Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team opened its 2010-11 home schedule Monday night against Pomona-Pitzer evening their record on the year at 1-1 with an 81-48 victory. BJ Shearry (pictured) led a balanced Highlanders offensive attack scoring 14 points while Elliott Berry added 12 and Harrison Gaines and Kevin Bradshaw each chipped in with 11 apiece.
The teams were tied at 17 with 7:28 to go in the first period when UCR went on a 12-0 run to take control of the game. Four different players scored during the run led by Shearry's four points. After Jake Flewer's free throw ended the streak, the Highlanders scored the next four points to give them their largest lead of the first half at 33-18.
The Highlanders started to pull away with 2:39 gone in the second half when they turned a 10-point lead into a 20-point advantage with a 10-0 run highlighted by consecutive dunks by Shearry and Phil Martin. Less than a minute later, a Tyquan Brown layup pushed the UCR lead to 20 again, and it would never dip below that mark the rest of the way.
UC Riverside dominated nearly every statistical category outshooting Pomona-Pitzer 52.5 percent to 28.0 percent, winning the battle of the boards 40-29, dominating the paint by a 44-6 margin, outscoring the Sagehens on the break 17-0, and turning 27 visitor miscues into 39 points.
Klewer led Pomona-Pitzer with 12 points on the evening and James Moss added 10.
The Highlanders head to the Lone Star State this weekend to take part in a three-day tournament hosted by SMU in Dallas. First up is a Friday, November 19 meeting with Lamar at 10:30 am PT. UCR takes on the host Mustangs on Saturday, November 20 at 3:30 pm and completes the tournament with a Sunday, November 21 game against Portland State with a 2:30 pm tip time.
