11/21/2010 2:08:49 PM | Men's Basketball
Portland State 69, UC Riverside 58 - Box Score
Dallas, TX —The Highlanders and Vikings were trading baskets for much of the afternoon on Sunday at the SMU's Moody Coliseum, but a 14-2 Portland State run midway through the second half gave the Vikings an 11-point lead on their way to a 69-58 victory. The loss dropped UC Riverside to 2-3 on the season, while the Vikings improved to 3-1.
Both teams were hot from the field in the first half of their final game of the SMU Invitational with the Highlanders connecting on 57.1 percent from the floor and the Vikings hitting 53.8 percent. Neither team led by more than six during the first 20 minutes of play, and the teams entered the locker room at halftime tied at 36.
It remained a tight game early in the second, and UCR was still leading, 43-42, with 14:58 to go, but that's when the Highlanders offense went cold. Over the next six-plus minutes, UC Riverside missed seven of eight shots and committed five turnovers while the Vikings went on their 14-2 run.
The Highlanders ended up shooting just 28.0 percent in the second half while Portland State remained hot by hitting 50.0 percent of their shots.
Martin tied for game-high scoring honors with 13 points while Borom added 11 and BJ Shearry chipped in with 10. Chris Harriel paced the Vikings with 13 points.
The Highlanders have the next week off for the Thanksgiving holiday returning to action at San Jose State on Sunday, November 28. Tip off is slated for 2 pm PT.
