Men's Basketball Comeback Falls Short In 55-48 Loss To Stanford

Palo Alto, CA—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team cut a 12-point second-half Stanford lead down to three with 1:51 to go, but the Cardinal scored the final four points of the game to take a 55-48 win over the Highlanders Sunday evening.
Both teams struggled to get in sync offensively in the first period as Stanford entered the locker room with a 21-14 lead. The Highlanders shot just six of 24 in the period while the Cardinal were nine of 30. Stanford forward Josh Owens was the difference in the initial 20 minutes as he connected on his first five shots leading all scorers in the first with 11 points.
Kevin Bradshaw scored the first bucket in the second half to shave the Cardinal lead to five, but a 5-0 Stanford run gave them their first double-digit lead of the night. Jeremy Green led the Cardinal charge early in the period scoring 11 straight points at one juncture. With 5:37 gone Stanford opened up a 12-point advantage, but the Highlanders started to crawl their way back into the game shortly theerafter.
Trailing by 11 with 12:50 to go, Bradshaw and Kareem Nitoto made back-to-back layups to make it a seven-point ballgame. Daymond Cowlah knocked down two free throws on UC Riverside's next possession cutting the lead to 38-33.
A Javon Borum three-pointer with 8:08 left on the clock brought UCR to within four at 42-38, and six minutes later, Phil Martin's dunk made it 51-48. Green's jumper with 1:25 to go pushed the Stanford lead to five, and Gabriel Harris' free throws with 29 seconds remaining ended the scoring.
Borum scored 12 of his team-high 19 points in the second half to lead the Highlanders comeback, and Martin added 12. Green led all scorers with 22, and Owens posted a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Cardinal enjoyed a 43-27 advantage on the boards including 23-11 on the offensive glass which paved the way to a 20-6 difference in second chance points.
The Highlanders remain on the road with a Tuesday evening game at Saint Mary's. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT.
