Cal Poly 87, UC Riverside 84 Double OT Box Score
Kyle Austin (pictured) put on another offensive clinic Saturday evening in front of a Homecoming crowd of 2,154 at the Student Recreation Center, scoring a career-high 39 points, but it wasn't enough as the Highlanders fell to Cal Poly 87-84 in double overtime. The loss drops UCR to 3-9 in conference, one half game behind eighth-place UC Irvine who played UC Davis later in the evening.
The Highlanders trailed most of regulation as the Mustangs built a 12-point lead in the first half and still led by eight with 11:10 to go in regulation. But the Highlanders went on a 17-4 run to take a 57-52 advantage with 5:09 left on the clock. UCR still led by six with 2:30 to go, but over their last several possessions they went 0 for 2 from the field and 1 for 4 from the free throw line as the game went into its first overtime.
Austin had 30 points in the first 40 minutes of play while Lateef McMullan added 10 points and six assists. It was Austin's second consecutive 30-point performance—a Division I-era first for the program—and the second highest Division I scoring output in UCR history as Rickey Porter scored 40 points at Pacific on January 7, 2006
The Mustangs built a four-point lead with 2:37 to go in the first overtime, but McMullan scored five points from the free throw line and Austin added a jumper to tie the game at 77 with 25 seconds to go.
Cal Poly's David Hanson was fouled going for a rebound with 1.7 seconds left on the clock setting up what looked to be a repeat of the last time these two clubs met. On January 21, Shawn Lewis made two freebies with 2.0 seconds left on the clock for a two-point win at Cal Poly's Mott Gym. Hanson was short on the first, however, and long on the second as Austin secured the rebound and the team's readied for a second overtime.
The Mustangs scored the first five points of the second OT as Hanson made a pair of free throws and Charles Anderson drained a three-pointer. Two Sean Cunningham free throws cut the advantage to three, but Cal Poly countered with a three by Kyle Odister to push the lead to six.
Austin connected on a long distance three and Niko Brooks made a lay up with 19 seconds to go to make it 85-84 Cal Poly, but Odister made a pair of free throws with 13 seconds to go and Austin's three from the top of the key missed as time expired.
The Highlanders have one more home conference game on the docket as UC Irvine comes to the SRC on Wednesday at 7 pm PT.
