UC Riverside vs. UC Irvine Game Notes
Not to overstate the case, but Wednesday’s home game against UC Irvine is the most important game of the season for the Highlanders. No doubt about it. Bar none. Period. End of discussion. ’Nuff said.
Tip is scheduled for 7 pm PT, and UCR fans who are unable to attend may listen to all the action as The Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, brings the call to gohighlanders.com.
A win over the Anteaters puts UC Riverside in eighth place in the Big West with three games to play. The Highlanders would then just need to match UC Irvine’s W-L record the rest of the way to earn a spot in the conference tournament. A loss drops UC Riverside two games back of UC Irvine in the standings and makes it likely that UCR would need to run the table over its final three conference contests to have a shot at the postseason.
The Highlanders beat the Anteaters on January 23 at UC Irvine’s Bren Center by the score of 65-56. Dwight Gordon (pictured) led UCR with a career-high 19 points that night and Kyle Austin added 18 as the Highlanders used a late 9-1 run to outscore the Anteaters 41-29 in the second half for their second conference win of the season.
That loss started a five-game conference losing streak for UC Irvine, but they put an end to that slide on Saturday, February 13 with a 69-67 win over visiting UC Davis. The Anteaters didn’t lead at all in the second period of that game until Patrick Rembert’s layup with nine seconds to go gave them their two-point margin of victory. Darren Moore scored 21 points for UCI in the win and Michael Hunter added 19.
