9/29/2010 8:37:32 AM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—Conference play gets underway this weekend for the UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (1-7-2) and the rest of the programs in the Big West. For the Highlanders, that means a visit from the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (4-4-2) on Friday, October 1 at 7 pm PT. Fans who are unable to attend the match in person may follow it on their computers and mobile devices via LiveStats.
The Highlanders are coming off of a tough 3-0 loss to 17th ranked Oregon State, in which they were forced to play a man down for the final 18:44 of the match. The score was 1-0 Beavers at the time UC Riverside received its red card infraction. Prior to that defeat, UCR had recorded back-to-back shutouts in scoreless ties against Utah State and Nevada.
Conference coaches picked UC Santa Barbara to win the Big West Championship this season in their annual preseason poll as the Gauchos returned eight starters and 21 letter winners from their 2009 squad which captured its second consecutive conference tournament title a year ago.
UCSB started out the year winning its first three matches, but they are 1-4-2 since then with losses to San Francisco (4-1), Minnesota (2-0), Marquette (1-0) and Oklahoma (1-0) on their ledger.
The Highlanders and Gauchos have faced off against one another on 10 occasions with UC Santa Barbara winning eight of those meetings.
