Riverside—Candis Novis got her foot on a UC Santa Barbara miscue ending the Highlanders scoeress drought Friday evening at the UCR Soccer Stadium, but It wasn't enough as the Gauchos scored two goals in the first half for a 2-1 victory.
In both teams' Big West Conference opener, the Gauchos (5-4-2, 1-0-0) got on board just 14:18 into the match as a give and go at the top of the box resulted in a Kylie McDonald goal for an early 1-0 UCSB lead.
The Gauchos made it 2-0 just 20 minutes later as McDonald was credited with an assist on Erica Seidman's goal at the 35:58 mark.
With just over two minutes before halftime, Novis stole the ball from her defender and had a breakaway towards the goal. She kicked it past the outstretched arms of keeper Makenna Henry to bring the Highlanders to within one, 2-1.
"Their keeper didn't come out and I just placed it in," Novis explained afterwards about the goal.
In the second half, the Highlanders (1-8-2, 0-1-0) picked up the intensity taking eight shots and owning the play late in the match. UC Riverside almost scored the equalizer with a minute to go as a flurry of activity erupted in the Gauchos box, but they couldn't find the back of the net and UC Santa Barbara held on for the 2-1 victory.
"Overall I thought for 70 minutes we played some good soccer," Head Coach Veronica O'Brien stated. "There's more for us to build on for future conference games."
Jessica White recorded six saves for the Highlanders while Novis (pictured) led the team with four shots.
UCR continues Big West Conference play on Sunday, Oct. 3 against Cal Poly at 1:00 pm at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
