Women's Soccer Looks To Get Offense On Track At San Jose State
9/8/2010 4:11:47 PM | Women's Soccer
San Jose, CA—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team (1-4-0) finishes up its four-match road trip this Sunday with a 1 pm PT start at San Jose State (1-5-0). Fans may follow the match on their computers via LiveStats.
The Highlander's defense has a goals against average of just 0.80 on the year, and hasnt allowed an opponent to score more than one goal in a match the entire season. The team's offense is still trying to get on track, however, as Melisa Escamilla's goal in UCR's 1-0 win at Texas State is the team's only score of the season.
The Spartans have had a bit more luck on the offensive side of the ledger with six goals on the year, but four of their five losses have been of the 2-1 variety including their most recent defeat at the hands of San Diego State on Friday.
UC Riverside and San Jose State share one common opponent so far this season: The Spartans dropped a 2-1 decision to San Francisco to begin the year, while the Highlander lost 1-0 to that same Dons squad on Friday, September 10.
UCR is 4-1-0 in their history against the Spartans and has won each of the last four meetings including a 4-0 decision on September 7, 2008 at the UCR Soccer Stadium.
GAME NOTES
ROAD WARRIORS
The Highlanders 1-0 win over Texas State on September 3 was the team's first road win since they toppled Cal State Northridge, 1-0, on October 30, 2008.
THE THINEST OF MARGINS I
The final margin in 24 of the Highlanders last 27 matches has been 1 goal or less including all 5 this season.
THE THINEST OF MARGINS II
Each of UC RIverside's last 8 losses, and 12 of the team's previous 13, have been by just one goal. The last team to beat the Highlanders by 2 goals was Cal Poly on October 9, 2009. Long Beach State was the last team to defeat UCR by more than 2 goals in a 4-1 win on October 17, 2008. That was also the last time the Highlanders allowed more than 2 goals in a match.
WHITE OUT
Highlanders goalkeeper Jessica White recorded 11 saves in the Highlanders' 1-0 season-opening loss to UNLV. Two weeks later, she was credited with 12 saves in the Highlandes 1-0 loss at Texas. She leads the Big West Conference with 37 saves.
In 2009, White finished the year with a goals against average of 0.80 (49th lowest in the nation) and a save percentage of .875 (10th best in the country). From August 28 through September 13, she ran off a 454 minute and 55 second scoreless streak spanning six matches.
Her 7 shutouts on the season were tied for the second most in Highlanders history.
AND A FRESHMAN SHALL LEAD THEM
It's still early yet, but freshman Melisa Escamilla is the Highlanders leading goal-scorer at the moment. Only twice in the nine-year history of the program has a freshman finished the year as the team's leading scorer—Jessica Armel (4 goals, 1 assist) in 2002 and Renee Scachetti (7 goals, 4 assists) in 2003.
