Cal Poly 65, UC Riverside 60 Box Score
Riverside—The Cal Poly Mustangs drained 12 of 29 three-pointers Thursday evening upending the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team 65-60 at the Student Recreation Center. The loss dropped the Highlanders to 2-3 in conference while the Mustangs improved to 4-2.
Cal Poly entered the game with a reputation as one of the stingiest defenses in the nation allowing teams to score just 58.1 points per game. Their offense was another story as they averaged just 54.8 points on offense while making 27.9 percent of their shots from long-distance.
The Mustangs took an early seven point lead at 14-7 with six minutes gone in the first with Dave Hanson accounting for 12 of those points on two three-pointers and three layups. He finished the first half with 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting including 3 of 4 from three-point range.
The Highlanders began crawling their way back into the game over the next four minutes finally taking their first lead of the game, 19-17 on a Javon Borum three-pointer with 10:37 left on the clock. After a Jamal Johnson three-pointer put the Mustangs back up 20-19, UCR held Cal Poly scoreless for nearly six minutes going on an 11-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game, 30-20.
Chris O'Brien ended the run with a lay up with 4:12 left on the clock which began an 8-0 Mustangs run and the Highlanders ended up taking a four point lead into the locker room.
UC Riverside made 56.0 percent of its shots in the first period, but Cal Poly's 7 of 14 performance from beyond the arc made up most of the difference.
The Highlanders still led 39-34 with 17:25 to go in regulation, but the Mustangs went on a 9-0 run to re-take the lead. Kareem Nitoto's old-fashioned three-pointer put UCR up by one at 44-43, but that was the last time the Highlanders would have the lead.
Cal Poly pushed their lead to nine with 5:24 to go, but the Highlanders had one more run in them. They cut the Mustangs advantage to three on two occasions, but couldn't quite close the gap.
Hanson finished with a game-high 21 points while Shawn Lewis and Jamal Johnson each chipped in with 11. Will Donahue added 14 rebounds on the night. Phil Martin paced the Highlanders with 14 points and Kevin Bradshaw and Borum joined him in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.
UC Riverside is off this weekend, but travels to Pacific and UC Davis on January 27 amd 29. Tip time for both games is 7 pm PT.
