Women's Soccer Begins Three-Match Road Swing Thursday At Cal Poly
10/12/2011 7:52:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team hits the road for its next three matches beginning with a Thursday, October 13 meeting with Cal Poly. Kick off is slated for 7 pm PT, and fans who are unable to attend may follow the match online and via certain mobile devices via GameTracker.
The Highlanders got back to the .500 mark last weekend with a 1-0 win over Pacific. It was just the team's second win ever over the Tigers. The last time the Highlanders were over the .500 mark this late in the season was in 2009 when they were 7-5-1 through 13 matches. UCR won its next match that season to move to 8-5-1 through 14 contests.
The Mustangs have been the very definition of an up and down team this season alternating wins and losses all year long save for a four-match stretch in the middle of the year in which they went 3-0-1.
UCR has just one win and three ties against Cal Poly in 10 career tries. The Mustangs have won three straight in the series with the Highlanders win coming in a 2-1 road victory on October 5, 2007.
Following Thursday's match, UCR travels to UC Santa Barbara for a Sunday, October 16 meeting with the Gauchos. Kick off is set for 5 pm.
UCSB was predicted to finish in the middle of the pack in 2011, but they have yet to win a conference match thus far dropping one-goal decisions to Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, UC Irvine and Cal State Northridge.
The Highlanders have two wins in 11 tries to their credit against the Gauchos, both on the road. Their most recent victory was a 1-0 decision on October 14, 2005. UCSB has won five straight matches over UCR.
GAME NOTES
GOAL!
Kayde Hensley scored the first goal of her collegiate career in a 1-1 double OT tie vs. Idaho on August 21.

She was rewarded by the Big West as the conference defensive player of the week for her efforts against the Spartans and in a 3-0 win over Mississippi State.
Hensley's third goal of the season was also the game-winner coming in the first half of the Highlanders 2-0 win over Southern Utah on September 4.
SGT SLAUGHTER
UC Riverside freshman goalkeeper Sara Slaughter made her Highlanders debut last week, and in her first start for the blue and gold, she posted a 1-0 shutout of Pacific while recording nine saves. It was just the second win for UCR over the Tigers in 11 tries.
A JESSICA BY ANY OTHER NAME

Olafsen was named the conference defensive player of the week on September 5 as she allowed just one goal, on a penalty kick, in two matches for a goals against average of 0.50 for the week. She also stopped 17 of 18 shots on goal during those two matches.
THE THINEST OF MARGINS I
The final margin in 40 of the Highlanders last 58 matches has been one goal or less including 13 of 18 in 2010 and 9 of 13 in 2011.
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
One year ago, the Highlanders suffered a 1-win season that produced just 3 goals all year long. In 2011, however, UC Riverside already has 6 wins to its credit and 15 scores.
