Phil Martin's 33 Points Lead Men's Basketball To 77-56 Exhibition Win

Riverside—Phil Martin scored a game-high 33 points and B.J. Shearry added 14 points, four steals and five blocked shots as the Highlanders picked up a 77-56 exhibition win over visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday evening. (Box Score)
The game was close through the first 25 minutes of action, and UC Riverside found itself trailing 40-39 with 15:25 remaining, but Martin scored the next four points and Harrison Gaines chipped in with four of his own to put the Highlanders up for good, 47-40.
UCR still had a seven-point lead, 53-46, with 8:49 to go, but the Highlanders scored 24 of the last 34 points of the night to secure the win.
Martin scored 23 of his points after the break connecting on 11 of 15 shots from the field in the second half. Shearry scored nine in the final 20 minutes of play as the pair nearly outscored the Otters by themselves. Their hot shooting helped UCR to a 62.2 percent shooting night after intermission en route to a 52.3 percent shooting effort for the game.
The Highlanders scored 26 of their 49 second-half points in the paint while forcing CSUMB to launch shots from long distance for most of the evening. Nearly 50 percent of the Otters shots on the night came from three-point range (27 of 60), and they connected on just eight of them for a 29.6 percent clip.
UC Riverside opens up regular season play with an November 11 home game against Cal Lutheran. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT
