Riverside—The UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team tips off its 2011-12 regular season this Friday with a home game vs. Cal Lutheran. Tip is slated for 7 pm PT. Fans who are unable to attend the game may follow along on their computers and select mobile devices by listening to the Voice of the Highlanders, John Ramey, bring the call from courtside to gohighlanders.com.
Cal Lutheran is a Division III athletics insitution and member of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. They went 14-12 a year ago finishing third in conference.
The Kingsmen's are without their two leading scorers from a year ago, Gregg Grimm (19.1 ppg, 38.7 3G%) and Aaron FIsher (12.8 ppg, 8.1 rpg). Aaron Van Klaveren returns for his senior season after nearly averaging a double-double a year ago (10.5 ppg, 8.9 rpg) and connecting on 55.4 percent of his shots from the field.
The Highlanders are coming off of a 2010-11 campaign that saw them advance to the Big West Conference Semifinals for the first time in the history of the program following an overtime upset of No. 2 seed Cal poly in the first round of the tournament.
UCR returns four of five starters from a year ago, and seven of the teams top eight scorers, making this one of the most veteran-laden teams in the program's 11-year Division I history. In 2010-11, as you may recall, the Highlanders returned just one player, David Chavarria, who played the previous season, but he was forced to sit out the year with an injury.
