Martin's 22 Points Lead Highlanders To 72-48 Win Over Cal Lutheran
11/11/2011 9:57:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Riverside—Phil Martin scored a game-high 22 points as the UC Riverside Men's Basketball Team removed an 11-year yoke from their collective backs winning their season opener for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, 72-48, over visiting Cal Lutheran. (Box Score)
The Highlanders last season-opening win came in a 77-51 decision over Dominican College on November 119, 1999. Since that time, UCR had dropped 11 straight openers, but all 11 were on the road, and came against the likes of UNLV, USC, Cal and Texas Tech.
Against the Kingsmen Friday evening, UC Riverside used a 20-10 run to close out the first period turning a 21-16 lead into 15-point advantage heading into the locker room. Martin scored 19 points in the first half draining seven of 11 shots from the field.
In the second half, a pair of David Chavarria free throws gave the Highlanders a 17-point lead with 16:27 to go, but Cal Lutheran ran off nine of the next 10 points thanks to three three-pointers from Jayvaughn Nettles. That reduced the UCR advantage to jut nine points with 12:19 left on the clock.
Kevin Bradshaw's fast-break dunk ended the Kingsmen run, as the Highlanders countered with an 11-0 run of their own. That effectively ended the game, as UC Riverside led 61-41 following a pair of Chavarria free throws.
Nettles led Cal Lutheran with 18 points on 5 of 9 shooting from the field including 4 of 8 from long range. Martin added a game-high eight rebounds to go along with his 22 points, while Elliott Berry chipped in with 10 points, four rebounds and two blocked shots off of the bench.
The Highlanders hit the road Sunday traveling to UTEP for a 2 pm tip against the Miners. The last time UCR began a season with a 2-0 record was at the start of the 1998-99 campaign.
