El Paso, TX—Two days after winning its first season opener in 12 years, the UC Riverside Men’s Basketball Team will try to improve to 2-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 season with a 2 pm PT tip off at UTEP.
The Highlanders opened on the road in each of the past 11 seasons, but broke their losing streak with a 72-48 home game against Cal Lutheran.
Phil Martin, who scored 33 points in UCR’s exhibition win over Cal State Monterey Bay, led all scorers again with 22 points to go along with a game-high 8 rebounds.
UTEP is coming off of a season-opening 73-64 loss to UT San Antonio. The Miners shot 45.1 percent from the field, but committed 21 turnovers and allowed UTSA to hit 50.0 percent of their shots including 7 of 14 from long distance. John Schaanon led UTEP with 12 points
The Highlanders and Miners have never faced off against one another, but they do have several connection between the universities. UTEP Head Coach Tim Floyd and UCR Head Coach Jim Wooldridge are long-time friends who played collegiately together and coached on the same Chicago Bulls staff from 1998-2000.
UC Riverside’s new director of intercollegiate athletics, Brian Wickstrom, was a senior associate athletics director at UTEP for five years prior to joining the Highlanders family.
