Women's Soccer Drops Big West Opener 4-1 To UC Davis Aggies

Riverside—The UC Riverside Women's Soccer Team opened Big West Conference play Thursday evening against visiting UC Davis, but it was the Aggies scoring twice in each period in picking up the 4-1 win. (Box Score).
The Highlanders had a golden opportunity to go up 1-0 with 21:25 gone in the first as Lindsey Ahmed found herself a breakaway, but she was unable to pull the trigger and Aggies keeper Maria Magana smothered the ball to preserve the scoreless tie.
UC Davis capitalized on its first scoring oppotuniry when Aisha Lott stole the ball just across midfield and beat Jessica Olfasen to the left side of the goal giving the Aggies a 1-0 advantage with just under 21 minutes remaining in the first. With 2:32 to go before halftime, UCD went up 2-0 as Rogan Dolan found Lisa Kemp in the box for a one-timer.
Kemp scored her second goal of the evening in the 62nd minute of play. The Highlanders committed a penalty just outside their box, and Kemp's subsequent free kick bounced off the cross bar and barely crossed the goal line.
Kemp added an assist seven minutes later as her header found Allison Kelly just outside the box, and Kell's shot found the back of the net for a 4-0 Aggies lead.
The Highlanders avoided the shutout when Alexandra Quincey and Jessica Cortez combined to find Vanessa Ybarra one-on-one with an Aggies defender. She broke free and beat Magana to the right post with just one second remaining on the clock.
UC Riverside is back in action this Sunday, October 9 at home against Pacific. Kick off is slated for 1 pm PT.
