Highlanders Volleyball Concludes Season At Home Friday And Saturday

Riverside—The UC Riverside volleyball team concludes the 2011 season this weekend with matches against Cal Poly on Friday and UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7:00 pm at the Student Recreation Center (Live Stats).
The Highlanders will look to avenge a 3-0 loss at Cal Poly from November 12, and set a new team record for Big West wins in the process.
UCR is currently tied with UC Irvine with a 4-10 record in league play. The Mustangs are just two games ahead at 6-8, while UC Santa Barbara sits in second place with a 9-5 record.
The Highlanders defeated the Gauchos for the first time in the school's Division I history picking up a 3-2 decision on October 15, 2011.
GAME NOTES
ASSIST ME
UC Riverside setter Katie Meyers has recorded 1,043 assists this season, moving into the top-10 in UCR single-season history. With two matches remaining, Meyers should pass Kym Murphy with 1,074 assists for seventh place.
BACK-TO-BACK
With wins against UC Davis and UC Irvine on November 5 and 9 respectively, UC Riverside won back-to-back Big West Conference matches for the first time since October 4 and 10, 2008 against Cal State Northridge and UC Davis.
RECORD SETTERS
The Highlanders tied the school record originally set by the 2003 squad, and later tied by the 2005 version, with four Big West wins after their 3-1 victory over UCI on November 9. The team needs just one more win in its last two matches to set a new program record.
BRING OUT THE BROOMS
The Highlanders 3-0 sweep of UC Davis on November 5 was the team's first conference sweep since November 3, 2007 at UC Davis.
ACES WILD
Katie Meyers recorded five service aces in the Highlanders 3-0 sweep of UC Davis on November 5—the most a Highlanders player has recorded since Dominique Cowling had six against Army on September 11, 2009.
STREAK REMOVERS
UCR upset Long Beach State by the score of 3-2 on October 1, snapping a 15-match skid against the 49ers in the process. The last time the Highlanders defeated the Beach was back on September 19, 2003, and at the time, LBSU was ranked 23rd in the country.
Four games later, the Highlanders rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to win the final three sets and defeat UC Santa Barbara 3-2 on October 15. The win snapped a 29-match skid against the Gauchos and marked the first win over UCSB in the program's Division I history.
MEAT IN THE SEATS
The UCR volleyball team is averaging 302 fans per game through eight home contests in 2011. If they can keep that up with two remaining home matches, it would be the highest average since the 2001 season in which they averaged 359 fans.
WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER
UC Riverside has won seven matches so far in 2011 which is five more wins than the 2010 team recorded in the entire season.
MORE COMPETITIVE
UC Riverside has won 18 sets during conference play so far in 2011—the most sets won since the 2004 squad won 21 sets in league play.
KILLER INSTINCTS
UCR's Amanda Vialpando is averaging 3.86 kills per set. If she keeps that up, it would be the highest kills per set average for a member of the Highlanders since Jamie DeKiewiet averaged 4.93 in 2005. Vialpando is also ranked 66th in the country in that category.
KILLER DUO
UCR's Vialpando and Shelby LeDuff are averaging 3.86 and 3.26 kills per set respectively. If they keep it up, it would be the first time since the 2004 season that two Highlanders players averaged at least 3.0 kills per set.
BREAKING RECORDS
The UC Riverside volleyball team opened Big West Conference play on September 24 in front of a record crowd of 745 fans at the Student Recreation Center. The attendance shatters the previous UCR volleyball home attendance record of 625 set on October 27, 2001.
